To Our Leaders:
I absolutely love love love this public ad from wecansolveit.org. What a powerful advertisement. The music, the bold statements and images--they all succeed at getting the viewer's attention (after all when do you hear such frenzied classical music on tv these days? not often.) I just love that music. But my favorite part is the silent beginning marked simply by the phrase "To Our Leaders:". The first interpretation is that this message is addressed at government officials. But then take a second look at who these adds are marketed to--the public. I love how this ad calls out the American people as the leaders of this country. Great great ad.

Too bad that totally clean energy in 10 years is basically not possible, unless we were in a command economy - and then it would just blow everything up way worse than the current financial crisis.
The next president instead should focus on being _energy independent_ within 10 years. That would probably include drilling for more oil, but it would also include, and set the stage for, massive increases and eventual dominance of clean homegrown energy.
In general, the science understanding of Washington and the current candidates is nil.
I definitely agree that clean energy is not possible in the next 10 years, but I think it's an effective advertisement nonetheless.
Regarding this notion of energy independent though...I have mixed feelings. I don't think long-term energy independence is possible UNLESS we have an increasing share of alternative energies there. And, from an economic perspective, energy independence isn't necessarily a good thing. It's a tough balance to achieve what's best on both an economic and political level. I suppose I do believe that energy independence is more important than a free market in energy, mostly to ensure that the whole country's survival is not in the hands of foreign providers. Plus, if we did try to achieve energy independence, we'd also be achieving more and more clean energy since our oil resources would not be sustainable.
